After 79 Years-India finally has its own Home Made MRI Machine
In what would be a major breakthrough for Healthcare in India-After 79 years of independence, India has finally built its first homemade MRI machine.
Bengaluru startup VoxelGrids, backed by Zoho, spent 12 years developing a fully indigenous 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner. It skips the costly liquid helium used in traditional machines, making it around 40% cheaper to build and far more energy efficient.
The scanner is already up and running at Chandrapur Cancer Care Foundation near Nagpur, helping cut India’s heavy reliance on imported medical equipment from global giants.
With India having only about 5,000 MRI machines for its entire population, this breakthrough could mean faster, cheaper scans for smaller hospitals and rural areas in the years ahead.
A proud moment for homegrown innovation.
