Johnson and Johnson Baby Powder Can Cause Ovarian Cancer, claims the jury

The famous brand Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has been ordered by a US court to pay a total of US $4.7-billion in damages to 22 women who alleged that the Johnson  & Johnson talc-based products caused them to develop ovarian cancer.

The court verdict against Johnson &Johnson came after the company was implicated in a total of 9 000 cases linked with the same talc powder product.

The trial involved 22 women, who stated that J&J product had caused them to develop ovarian cancer after the consistent use of the talc powder. To date, 6 of the 22 women represented in the case have died from cancer. The trial lasted six weeks, and the claims rest on the fact that talc, a clay mineral, is generally found in deposits alongside asbestos ore, which indeed is a cancer risk.

Talc is a mineral that is usually found in the ground close to asbestos. Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that is linked to many life-threatening severe diseases including lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis.

The international pharmaceutical company denies the presence of asbestos in the talc-based products and says the Food and Drug Administration conducted a survey in 2009 and 2010 and found no trace of asbestos in the products.

The prosecution, however, in this case, argued that Johnson & Johnson and the FDA’s tests were flawed.
J&J is not happy with the court verdict and says it is prepared to challenge the verdict using an element of “forum shopping.”

Meanwhile, the plaintiffs’ lawyer, Mark Lanier, said in a statement that Johnson & Johnson should either pull its talc products from shelves or mark them with a “serious warning.”
