There was a time when Summer vacations meant a visit to some family members place and spending quality time with them, be it, Grandparents or uncles. The only past time used to play, play and just play and it used to be a lot of fun for most of the children. It gave time to children to get away from studies and focus on other activities like bonding with siblings and other relatives along with indulging in a lot of physical activities. The elders would be in the habit of narrating stories to the younger ones especially at night time and the kids used to look forward to it with a lot of anticipation. The luxury of spending so much time meant that they could gel and understand each other better with very little distractions in the form of electronic gadgets, TV, etc.
A lot of Physical activities meant that the children ended up burning a lot of calories, which helped them immensely in building their stamina and be fitter and slimmer. However, times have changed completely. Though the distances have been cut down drastically due to the advancement of technology and much faster means of transportation and communication yet the desire to spend time with other family members has come down because of a number of reasons, both avoidable and unavoidable.
Things have changed upside down during the course of the last decade. The ever increasing desire to go after materialistic comforts has resulted in a mad rush to chase them. Globalisation has added fuel to the fire by making today’s generation aware of the latest trends happening in the world and the youth is not ready to accept a lifeless comfortable than their western counterparts.
The increased level of ambitions means increased focus on being self-centred and achieving goals at the cost of sacrificing relationships which have taken a heavy toll on the way we perceive relationships. The mad rush has lead to a rat race wherein everybody wants to excel and choose high paying careers which have put a lot of pressure on the kids of generation next as nobody wants to settle for anything but the best.
This, in turn, means that Parents are under constant pressure to provide the kids with the best of education as education is a means of achieving financial goals. The general belief is what we study and how well we study is what makes a difference in landing up with good jobs.
The increasing importance of education means that the students need to be in the rat race of scoring good grades to getting admissions in the best possible schools and colleges. It necessarily means that the children of today can no longer afford to go in for the kind of vacations their parents enjoyed a decade ago which deprives them of the opportunity to find their artistic side by spending quality time with the family or others.
The kids are constantly under pressure to keep adding newer skills forcefully even though they might not be interested in the same as the parents want their children to be a step ahead of others in this competitive environment. Also at times with both parents working, parents find it as a good option to engage the child in some activity so that the children could spend time effectively but the fact of the matter remains that they are in a way trying to compensate for their inability to spend time with the children.
The pressures of the modern world have lead to a situation wherein families find very little time to spend with each other, forget visiting others. This has virtually robbed the children of today of the much cherished time they could otherwise have had during the summer vacations. The children then resort to electronic gadgets like mobile phones, Games and TV to pass their time and they become the child’s most valuable companions of all times. Lack of physical exercises means that the children of today can be prone to a lot of disorders, the most common being obesity and anxiety disorders.
Therefore it is high time that parents stop putting too much pressure on children and let them enjoy the summer vacations in a way which could bring their childhood back and not rob them of their most precious childhood days as this time in their life is not going to come back again.
Let the kids enjoy and be away from studies and explore their creative side as this is and could be the time when the child could end up finding their interest areas and start focusing on theme but that can only happen when the child is given the freedom of doing so rather than being forced into unwanted situations like joining a hobby course or a dance class in which probably the child is not interested. Rather encourage them to Read Books, Play Games, and watch educative TV Programmes like Wild Life, Discovery or even playing a game of Snakes and Ladder with the entire family.
So the bottom line is-Summer Vacations are a hard-earned time for the children. Let them do what they want to and enjoy it to the fullest so as to be completely recharged and refreshed for the challenges which lie ahead when the school sessions start and let them not be bombarded with undesirable choices of yours.
