Parents often complain that their child does not sit still, does not listen to anyone, gives an unethical response to others, does not pay attention, is restless and many of this kind. All this leads the parents to either scold the child too much or get worried or tensed up about their behaviour. Some may even say that it’s normal and would change with time. But, it’s not that simple many times. As it may not be your child’s fault -your child could be suffering from ADD (Attentive Deficit Disorder)/ ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).ADHD is a complex mental health disorder which may affect the child’s success or failure in school and in building interpersonal relationships.
Most of the times it is very difficult to judge between a child’s behaviour and ADD/ADHD as it does not have very specific symptoms. There is no specific test for it either. Hence, if you have any such doubt, your first step should be to consult the doctor to diagnose the same. Diagnosing it may involve several steps and gathering a lot of information from various resources linked with the child’s day to day routine. ADD/ADHD can be diagnosed in children in the age group of 4 to 18 years, however, for preschoolers, it gets quite difficult to judge as the symptoms could be natural and at this stage, usually the behaviour changes with time.
