Its intense aroma, the bittersweet and robust taste are not only reasons that make coffee super rich. It is loaded with other beneficial active compounds and vitamins that provide a variety of pink-health characteristics. Your tasty cup of coffee does not only fulfil your tongue’s needs but also brings amazing health benefits to you.According to a study, drinking about three cups of coffee a day can prevent various heart diseases. Atherosclerosis, a significant risk factor for heart, is curbed down by coffee. Let us find out more about it.
What is Atherosclerosis?
Atherosclerosis is the hardening and tightening of the arteries. It silently and slowly blocks the arteries putting the blood flow through and to the heart at risk. It is known to be the most usual cause of heart attacks, strokes and peripheral vascular disease. These are collectively known as cardiovascular diseases.
How is Atherosclerosis Caused?
It begins with the damage caused to endothelium, which happens due to high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels in the body and last but not the least, smoking. This damage leads to the formation of plaque. This plaque is white blood cells and LDL cholesterol. It forms a bump in the artery wall over the years and ultimately a blockage.
The Consequences
Atherosclerosis causes symptoms until middle or older age usually. When the blockage becomes severe, it chokes the blood off and causes pain. And this may lead to a rupture.
How good is Coffee for Heart?
According to a recent study, coffee reduces the chances of Atherosclerosis. It prevents the build-up of plaque in the arteries that supply the heart. But drinking too much coffee is also considered to increase the harmful cholesterol levels in the body. Literature is confusing. To reach a conclusion, a study was conducted in Korea to find out if coffee is good for the heart or not.
The study was done on over 25 thousand men and women who went through routine health screening exams. None of them had any signs of heart diseases. After reporting to different lifestyle habits, like smoking, consuming alcohol, food, coffee consumption etc. they were given CT scans. This was done to determine the level of calcium deposited in their coronary arteries. Calcium is not meant to be present here, and its presence leads to the conclusion that the person is, or is at the risk of, suffering from heart disease.
The scans revealed had revealed that none of them had any symptoms of Coronary heart diseases, more than 13% people had the presence of calcium in their arteries. But when it was intensely observed, it was discovered that those who drank 3-5 cups of coffee a day had 40% less calcium in their arteries than those who did not drink any. 35% people were those who took 1-3 cups a day, while 23% were those who drank just one.
Although this study spoke a lot about the benefits of Coffee for Heart, scientists could not explain how coffee is responsible for good heart health. They believe it could be because of the presence of antioxidants in coffee. This was among the most significant studies conducted through food frequency questionnaires to find out the association between coffee consumption and heart diseases.
