Oily hair is a major problem for many people especially those who have an active lifestyle. Oily hair makes hair look slick and limp. Everybody desires to have hair that’s bouncy and full of life. Oily hair looks flat and gives a dull appearance. Oily hair is extremely high in maintenance as it requires special care and daily shampooing. Excessive oil in your hair can be either due to lifestyle or due to the nature of your scalp. Oily hair if not treated can lead to various other issues.
Skin and scalp pores have got millions of sebaceous glands. These glands are responsible for the healthy shine in your hair. The over-secretion of oil by these glands makes your hair oily and greasy. Oily hair catches dirt, and grime quickly and thus requires daily hair wash. Sometimes the oil produced doesn’t reach out to the entire strands of hair. This leads to dry ends with a greasy scalp. Excess oil production is also caused due to hormonal imbalance. Hormonal imbalance triggers the sebaceous glands to secrete more oil making your hair greasy. During the onset of puberty, the hormones are unsettled and promote oil production. Birth control pills also cause hormonal imbalance and result in oily skin and scalp.
Over scrubbing or washing of scalp can cause over-production of sebum. Over scrubbing leads to dry skin and to make it moist, sebum production increases. Excessive brushing also spreads the oil across the hair strands making your entire mane appear oily and flat.
Oily hair can be treated with intensive care and a healthy hair care routine. Firstly it is important to cleanse the hair with a gentle diluted shampoo. If you use undiluted shampoo every day, it would trigger more sebum production. To avoid such situation, diluted shampoo is best. Rinsing hair with vinegar or lemon and water solution controls the overproduction of oil by the sebaceous glands. They also keep away oily hair problems like dandruff and scalp acne at bay. Using a curd and henna hair pack once a week will keep hair healthy and oil-free for longer. Henna is drying at the same time nourishing. Curd adds the necessary moisturiser making your hair look healthy without the greasy shine.
Oily hair often causes skin problems like pimples. If you notice cheek pimples, then you should consider treating your hair first. Cleansing hair regularly keeps your hair oil-free and gives you clear skin too. Our daily habits like touching the hair regularly increase the problem of oily hair. Keep your hair tied all day unless you have any plans for a party or so. Useless styling products clutter your scalp with foreign elements like silica which encourages oil production. Above all a healthy diet rich in fresh fruits, juices and vegetables are a must as they help in maintaining a healthy body and promotes fresh looking skin and hair!
