A lipstick gives a complete look to a woman. Be it a work event, college party or a normal get together with friends; lipstick is an accessory most women just cannot do without. However, the market today is flooded with so many brands and types of lipstick shades; that it might be difficult for some women to select the perfect lipstick for themselves.
Some Guidelines that will help you select the Perfect lipstick
A. Know your Skin Tone
There are various ways to know your skin tone:
1. Examine your skin in natural lighting to know your complexion
The first step to buying the right lipstick is knowing your skin tone as if the lipstick will not match your skin tone; it won’t compliment you.
To know your complexion, you can analyse your skin in natural lighting. Focus on the skin around your jawline to determine the complexion.
Those with a fair complexion have pale and translucent skin, and they burn easily. They also may have freckles and some redness.
If your skin is pale and when you are in the sun, you burn and then tan; then it means that you have a light skin complexion.
Those with a medium complexion tan easily but they generally do not burn.
If your skin is tan or olive and you burn rarely and look tanned even during the winter season, it means that you have a tan complexion.
Those with a deep skin complexion never get sunburned and have dark skin. Their hair is possibly black or dark brown.
2. Look at the veins on your wrist
This is the best and a quick way to know if you have a neutral, warm or cool skin tone.
Blue or purple veins determine that you have a cool skin tone.
Green veins indicate you have a warm skin tone.
If you are not able to decide if your veins are blue or green, then there is a possibility that you have a neutral skin tone and can choose lipstick shades from both the cool and warm spectrum.
3. Analyse how your skin reacts to the sun
You have to see whether you tan easily or burn easily?
If your skin tans easily, it means that it has more melanin, which indicates that you have a warm skin tone
If your skin first burns and then tan, or maybe don’t tan at all, then your skin has less melanin and it indicates that you have a blue or a cool skin tone.
B.Choose the Right Shade based on the Skin Tone
After knowing the skin tone, you must choose the right shade based on the skin tone and complexion:
1. Choose a shade that is close to your natural colour. To test if the shade matches your natural colour; apply the lipstick to your lower lip and then compare that shade to your upper lip. If the shades look drastically different, then do not opt for that shade and keep looking for a shade that matches the natural colour of your skin.
2. Decide the shade on the basis of whether you want your lips to look smaller or larger. Dark shades make lips look smaller, while light shades makes lips look plump.
Also, lipstick with a matte finish may also make lips look thinner, and on the other hand glosses and shimmer shades can make lips look fuller.
3. Try shades that beauty experts recommend for a particular complexion and skin tone.
If you have light or fair skin, then you may try light pink, coral, nude, peach or beige shades. Those with cool undertones can try a soft mocha and nude. If you have warm undertones, you can try pale pinks or a nude with a little peach.
Those who have a medium skin can try rose, berry or mauve shades. People with cool undertones may try pink or cranberry shades, while those with warm undertones can try copper or bronze.
Women who have tan skin must avoid browns and purple shades and should go for shades with an orange undertone. They can also try coral or deep pink.
Those who have a deep complexion can try brown and purple shades. Cool undertones may look for ruby and wine-coloured reds. Those who have warm undertones should go for copper or bronze shades.
C. Choose the Right Red
A red shade lipstick can be found in most women’s wardrobe. But, you must choose a shade which suits your skin tone and complexion.
Those with fair and light skin should look for dusty, pinkish-red or coral. Cool undertones should go for raspberry, while warm ones must go for reds with a blue undertone or coral.
Women with a tan or a medium skin should opt for bright cherry red. Those with warm undertones must go for orangey-red or tangerine shades; while those with cool undertones should use wine.
Women with deep skin with warm undertones should try blue-based red shade; while those with cool undertones should go for deep wine or metallic ruby red.
