The thyroid is commonly known as the butterfly gland and is located below Adam’s apple in the neck.
It is one of the most important glands in the body which regulates many of the body’s processes such as energy, metabolism and mood.
The thyroid gland produces two major hormones, which are: Triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). When the thyroid gland does not produce these hormones in an appropriate amount, a person may experience symptoms such as lack of energy, weight gain, depression, dry skin, tiredness, constipation and frequent menstrual periods. This condition is known as Hypothyroidism.
When the thyroid gland produces these hormones in an excess amount, then the person may experience weight loss, tremors, anxiety, nervousness, diarrhoea, a feeling of being too hot and irregular menstrual periods. This condition is called Hyperthyroidism.
What is a Thyroid Test?
Thyroid Function Tests are blood tests that are done to measure the levels of the hormones produced by the thyroid gland. Some thyroid tests even check the level of hormones produced by the pituitary gland in the brain, which acts on the thyroid gland.

Why is a Thyroid Profile Test done?
A Thyroid Profile Test is done to:
• Check whether the thyroid gland is working in a proper manner or not.
• Detect the cause of Hypothyroidism, i.e. an underactive thyroid gland. A thyroid test can help in determining the exact cause of Hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism can be caused due to a damaged thyroid gland or other causes such as a problem with the hypothalamus or the pituitary gland.
• Monitor treatment with thyroid replacement medicine for those who have hypothyroidism.
• Monitor the functioning of the thyroid gland in people who are being treated for Hyperthyroidism.
• Screen for inherited thyroid problems in newborn babies.
How is the Test done?
Thyroid Profile Test is a simple blood test. The health professional wraps an elastic band around the upper arm of the patient to stop the flow of the blood. Then the needle site is cleaned with alcohol, and the health professional puts the needle into the vein.
A tube is then attached to the needle to fill it with blood, and the elastic band is then removed from the patient’s arm after enough blood is collected. As the needle is removed, the health professional puts a cotton ball or a gauze pad over the needle site, put pressure to the site and put on a bandage.
